Broken machinery
On Saturday while I was hanging out with my mom, I got a text from Brad.
“The DVD player is broken. I’m going to get a new one.”
By the time I got home he had hooked up the new one, and the old one was on the floor near the tv stand where it stayed for a couple days. I’m not really sure what the appropriate process is for discarding broken electronic equipment, but I figured it would eventually find its way to the trash.
Yesterday I saw Brad pick up the broken machine and carry it toward the bedroom.
“Where are you going with that honey?”
“In here.”
“In the bedroom? Why?”
“I don’t know…”
“Isn’t it broken?”
“Yeah, but just in case it starts working again someday.”
Um, okay. I suppose since I have no idea what’s wrong with it, I shouldn’t doubt that it might magically start working again one day. So I just shrugged my shoulders.
And now the tv on my dresser is sharing its space with a broken DVD player.
Hmm… maybe it’s not really broken, and he just wants to use it to watch porn. I just thought of that. Hon, is there something you need to tell me?

boys are funny … we had one under our dresser for the longest time and now it is under our basement stairs, making electronic babies it seems as the pile keeps growing …

My Brad still has two broken DVD players. I don’t think we really know where they are supposed to go.

No porn. I’m just not convinvced that it’s entirely broken just yet. It wouldn’t play the two DVDs I tried in it (which work fine in the new one, btw) but it sounds like an issue with the laser not lining up right. So I’m keeping it and just getting it out of the living room so that somedaywhen I’m bored I’ll pop in a disc (oh, I don’t know, maybe a porn one) and see if it still works.

Well, if Brad likes to shoot, and he becomes convinced it’s really broken. He could bring it to the state land and do target practice, as Kevin always does with all of his broken electronic equipment. Or you can donate it to Kevin and his sisters, they always love something new to shoot.

tee hee hee hee. . . . it’s hard to give up electronics even when they break. it seems like they should work forever. and i’d add it to your recycle closet….those wreak havoc in the landfills if they aren’t recycled properly.

By the way, you can go to http://www.gcycle.org for information on where and how to recycle your old gadgets. Surprisingly, Best Buy and Staples accept a lot of stuff!

I’m the same way! I hold onto lots of electronics because I’m convinced they’ll work again… because dammit, I paid a lot of money for it!
I think my iPod Nano is crapping out on me and I’m about to formulate a hate letter to Apple. I’ve only had it for 2 years!

Umm, what is it about men and their emotional attachment to broken electronic equipment?
Sometimes I hint that things will disappear in the middle of the night…
