Week 4 through Week 13

I should start by saying I did not intend to put a lot of effort into baby belly photos. I love beautiful photography, but I don't relate to the idea of extreme photo shoots. Backdrops and lighting and editing and all that. I may just be lazy. My plan was to just snap a pic each week so I could watch the progress that I might not notice on a day-to-day basis.

But then we saw those lists that compare the size of the growing baby to various fruits and vegetables, and I thought I have a chef husband, how can I NOT do a food-themed belly growth photo series? I didn't post any of these for the first few months because I didn't want to get too comfortable in this pregnancy, just in case. Plus, I'm still incredibly sensitive to those who are still struggling to conceive. Parading my belly around didn't feel very compassionate.

However, I think I'm ready to share them now. I'll put some scroll space before the photos though, just in case.

First, you should know that I've always had a little belly. I haven't seen a flat tummy since 7th grade. So in those early weeks, that's not a baby bump, that's just straight-up Shannon.

WEEK 5: Size of a Sesame Seed

This is how I intended to do these pictures: quick shots in the mirror for posterity's sake. So no sesame seed present here.

WEEK 6: Size of a Lentil

This photo is a little embarassing. We almost forgot to take one at all, so here I am at night, fresh out of the shower - no makeup and hair a fright. Can you see the lentil? It's that teeny tiny orange dot between my finger and thumb.

WEEK 7: Size of a Blueberry

WEEK 8: Size of a Kidney Bean

WEEK 9: Size of a Grape

WEEK 10: Size of a Prune

I think you can see a difference between 9 and 10, but I actually think it's partly the angle of the photo and partly extreme bloat!

WEEK 11: Size of a Lime

We were in Chicago for the week 11 milestone, so the backdrop is a little different. Also, Mike bought a giant lime, so I intentionally partially covered it up.

WEEK 12: Size of a Plum

WEEK 13: Size of a Peach

And that, officially, was the first trimester! I can see a little growth from Week 4 to Week 13, but minimal. When you start with a little bit of chub, I don't think you typically show quite as early. It's coming though. I'm pretty sure I won't be a cute, dainty pregnant lady.

I'm now almost 17 weeks, so I'll catch up on the second trimester soon. Spoiler: there's an oddly giant lemon coming up!

(We used a combination of Baby Center's How Big is Your Baby? and The Bump's How Big is Baby?, using whichever item was easier to find that week.)

What a ridiculously cute and clever way to take photos of your belly. Now I wished I would have done that! I just started taking belly photos and mostly out of guilt that I have a whole book of belly photos when I was pregnant with AM and hadn't really documented anything with baby #2.

You look great! Can't wait to see you try to balance a large melon when you're like 38 weeks pregnant. :-)

I've seen people do this and always wondered, do you eat the fruit/food afterward? That just seems a little weird.

I'm so excited for you, and I eagerly await every post. I just can't get enough!

Lindsay, so funny you'd ask that. When we did the blueberry, Mike popped it in his mouth after the photo and I was appalled! That's our baby! I've gotten used to it since, though I don't think I've ever eaten any of it, only Mike.

LOL. Wonder what that says about your parenting styles! I distinctly remember considering doing these photos and thinking, "But I couldn't eat it after using it as a representation of my child. And just imagine a whole cantaloupe or watermelon going to waste eventually!" I guess it's good husbands/partners can be more relaxed about that sort of thing.

I LOVE this! It's darling. And also, I think the photo of you with no makeup and out of the shower is pretty. You're so photogenic.
