I've got something in my eyes!
Friday, February 13, 2009 at 06:23AM
Aside from a couple occasions on which I wore contacts for a brief period, this is the first time I've put contacts in my eyes in two months! Actually it was three months ago that I started having issues with my left eyeball, and it was two months ago that I officially stopped wearing contacts.
On my first date with the Giraffe, my eye threw a fit, turning hideously red and painful. Fortunately the Giraffe decided he liked me despite my Monster Eye, but it was that night that I decided I had to put the contacts away for awhile. The Monster Eye eventually cleared up, so around Christmas I decided to try again. Fail. And that was even with a brand new pair of contacts, so what the hell? Something was clearly wrong.
I made an appointment at the first eye place I could think of, but when I showed up for my appointment I realized my insurance didn't cover me there. So I made an appointment with a place that did, but it was going to be a month and a half before I could get in (nice huh?). I've been wearing my glasses every single day since then. I am so sick of having glasses on my face. I want my contacts back!
(Last weekend I wore them twice, but only for a few hours at a time. My Monster Eye didn't return, but I could tell my eyes were still not happy about this foreign invader.)
Yesterday at my appointment, the doctor told me I need to try a daily wear contact. As in wear it for a day, throw it out. Seems wasteful. And expensive. But maybe I'm willing to pay a little extra and be a little wasteful if it means getting the damn frames off my face! The dude gave me enough free samples to get me through about a week, then I get to decide what I want to do.
So far no Monster Eye, but really, I'm not sure they're all that much better than any other lens I've used. Have any of you used daily wear contacts? Is it worth the extra money? Am I just being had here?

How much is having your eye and sight worth?
Never had the daily wear ones. I always found them wasteful and expensive too. You've been wearing your glasses long enough, though, to jump right into lasik.
Seriously, I would imagine that the daily wears are better for your eyes. Did the doctor say what was causing the sensitivity?
I tried the daily wear lenses and didn't really notice any difference. The only thing that has helped me (somewhat) has been taking at least 2 days a week completely off from wearing contacts (usually 3-4), and cleaning my lenses in some expensive solution my friend suggested (I think it's called "Lasting Comfort"?).
Are you sure you don't have some kind of allergy that's causing the problem? You might try going to an opthamologist instead of an optometrist. (Maybe you did - I'm just throwing that out there in case.) I'd be cautious about Lasik - my optometrist said "oh, you'd be a great candidate," but my opthamalogist said that my tear ducts don't really produce enough moisture as it is, and Lasik might make my eyes hurty and dry all the time.
I switched to daily wear contacts about 2 years ago after having some really gross eye issues (monster eye pretty much sums it up.) I have found that I spend about a dollar a pair. I wear my glasses a lot though, so it hasn't been grossly expensive for me. I like the idea of having brand new, sterile contacts every time I wear them. I guess it depends how often you're going to wear contacts.
I used to wear the daily kind way back in the day. I was suppose to sleep in them, I never did. I would treat them like regular contacts, take them out at night and put them back in everyday for about a week. Then move onto a new pair.
I could never got back to contacts. I love my glasses too much.
I've thought about using them, but have succumbed to wearing my glasses always. I wish I could wear contacts, but for the past two years, my eyes just don't cooperate. Keep us updated on how they work, so I know if I should get some for some fun days out :)
I have so many thoughts!
The first contacts I ever had were "hard" contacts. These are rather uncommon (I don't think I've met someone since who wears them). They worked really well, but took several weeks to adjust to and then every time I put them in, it took a few minutes. Since I'm the laziest person ever, I went back to glasses.
A few years later, I got contacts again (so I could see better since my eyesight just sucks SO MUCH) and my doctor said I should get the soft contacts. My eyes loved them the first wear, but when I put them in the case overnight, they killed me the next morning. Too much pain to wear.
So, I was told to rinse them in distilled water. Also didn't work.
Dailies it was.
Interesting fact: The laziest person ever (me) accidentally slept in them the third day I wore them.
And nothing happened! I woke up the next morning and I could see just fine, my eyes didn't hurt, etc. Perfection.
I've been doing this for ten years now. I can usually wear a pair of dailies for one to two months before it pops out of my eye due to old age. I don't experience any side effects though. I've heard of this working for a couple people, but not everybody. And this only worked for me with dailies, not any other contacts.
Also, I've heard that they came up with ones you can leave in. Worth asking for samples for those too.
Oh, and you can usually get contacts way discounted if you research it.
I've never worn daily contacts but I do wear "Night & Day" by CIBA. I LOVE them because they are worn for 30 days straight. I never take them out and can't feel them when they are in unless an eyelash or foreign object gets in my eye. Ask for a trial pair. :D
[...] had my trial week with the daily contacts, and I gotta say, not that impressed. While I loved tossing them at the end [...]
