Get the red out
Tuesday, December 23, 2008 at 07:51AM
My eyeball hates me. Over a month ago my left eye started turning red all the time, so eventually I stopped wearing contacts, thinking I should give the poor thing a break. For almost the last two weeks I've worn nothing but glasses, and my eye was starting to look and feel better.
Yesterday I was going out though, so I put my contacts in. I thought I was doing fine, but by the end of the night I looked in the mirror and saw a monster! My eye was hideous. I took the contacts out as soon as I got home and have been wearing glasses since, but still my eye is red and hurty.
What the hell is going on?
It's a brand new pair of contacts, so it's not because they're old or dirty. They feel fine in my eyes at first, but after a full day suddenly I looked stoned. But it is obviously connected to my contacts because everything was fine for weeks when I was glasses-only.
Dr. Google suggested I might have "contact lens induced dry eye" which means my eyes aren't getting enough oxygen when I wear contacts. Seems the only remedy is to not wear contacts so often, which is just great since I prefer to wear them nearly EVERY DAY! I'm so sick of the glasses on my face.
Has anyone had this? Is there a solution?

Go to an eye doctor and have it checked out. You don't want to take any chances with your eyesight! Seriously!!! Do it.
this happened to me a few years ago and now I wear glasses every day
sorry - wish I had something more positive to say
You know, ophthalmologists study an extra three years after med school just so they can answer questions like this. Call one.
Yes, I've had this. Both of my eyes got so dry that I ended up wearing my glasses pretty much 100% of the time. I got cute glasses and actually ended up liking wearing them all the time. They do make contacts that allow more air flow. Your eye doc would know about them. I'd for sure go see an eye doctor, preferably and opthamologist, see what they say. I ended up getting lasik surgery, so now I don't have contacts or glasses and my eyes aren't dry. It worked out perfectly for me, couldn't be happier. However, I know some people that have dryer eyes now, because of the surgery. It's not a clear-cut answer, but maybe a doctor can help. Good luck!
The first time I ever put contacts in I went out that night, and when I got home, I tried to take them out, and grabbed my eye instead. It was gross. I've worn glasses ever since but I look much better without them, so ive got an appt to get contacts. Hopefully it works out better this time. I've never heard of what you're talking about but it sounds plausible. I would definitely look into that.
I do have this, hence the sudden constant wear of my glasses. But prior to contact induced dry eye, I had one eye that kept getting red. I ended up finding out that I had an ulcer in my eye. So you should go to the eye doctor to make sure?
J's sister had this from the dry, cold weather-- she lives in Wisconsin --she got some aqua drops from the pharmacy and limited her contact wear for a month. it seemed to clear up.
i wear O2 contacts, you might want to call the eye dr and see if they can provide some samples of some lighter contacts. sometimes your eyes just need a change. :)
I highly recommend making an appt with an opthamologist. I had some serious issues with my eyes a few years ago and thought going to an optometrist was almost the same thing. It really isn't. If you actually have some sort of infection (that worsens with contact wear), your opthamologist can prescribe you medication.
I get dry eyes from my contacts but was only told that I just need to use lubricating drops throughout the day and that's what I do.
I can't wear contacts when it's cold and dry outside. I don't know if that would only affect one of your eyes, though. It sounds like it might be some kind of infection or scratch? I say go with glasses until you have a chance to see your eye doctor.
Prolonged use of contact lenses does just that. Once it gets dry, it becomes a red eye which in turn is very much irritating. Try using those special eyedrops they use just for these occasions.
