Those gals from Oklahoma
Sunday, October 8, 2006 at 12:01PM
I flew to Phoenix for a work thing at the end of last week. On the way there, when the plane touched down in Oklahoma City, four women surrounded me in my window seat. They had all been drinking at the airport bar, so they were quite a rowdy bunch. I automatically disliked them.
When they sat down, they started in on some stupid inside joke that included the words "99.9% sure" which they repeated over and over again. Except they were from Oklahoma, so it was more like "non-dee non point non percent shore." Before we even got off the ground, I was 99.9% shore I was going to hurt them all.
But then the one next to me showed off a picture of her god-daughter, who was the little girl of her friend across the aisle. I asked what the girl's name was, and it turned out to be the exact same name I want to name my future daughter. So then I sorta didn't hate them as much.
Until they ordered gin and tonics all around. One whiff of gin is enough to make me vomit, and these were strong drinks. I was already feeling a little queasy from all the take-offs and landings, so I suddenly hated everyone again.
But slowly I came to realize that they were headed to Phoenix for a surprise birthday party. The girl next to me was turning 30 and all her friends were taking her on a 5-day trip. She had no idea where they were going (somehow they kept the destination a secret) until just before we landed. Even though I was incredibly envious of such a fun idea, I couldn't really hate them anymore. Because come on! Those are pretty damn awesome friends.

Not shit! Jessi needs some friends like that! I have cheap friends (my one girlfriend is like the cheapest ever) who just wouldn't have "enough money" to ever do something like that. Uggg! I'm so jealous!
To be fair, I think the birthday girl was paying for a lot of her own things (flight, etc). She wanted to go on a trip and asked her friends to surprise her. But I mean her friends planned it all and spent all their own money to take a trip for her birthday. That's frickin' awesome!
I want someone to surprise me with a trip someday, that would be so much fun!
