While you’re all watching SYTYCD, I’m stuck with a black screen

We still haven’t figured out our tv. We still get no channels. We bought a fancy antenna and everything, and we hooked it with and without the converter box, and everything failed. For about 10 minutes we got Fox, but even that went away. We’re out of ideas, but we also don’t want to pay for cable when all we really care to watch are the free channels. I’ve tried to throw the whole damn thing off the back porch, but the Giraffe stopped me. He likes his tv even if it doesn’t get any channels.

So we’ve been watching a lot of movies and tv shows on DVD. Currently we’re in the middle of the British (and original) version of The Office. I’m confused though. Are their series like our seasons? Were there only two series (seasons) then?

The Giraffe was ready to dismiss it after watching the pilot, but I wanted to give it a chance. I don’t think he realized that the American version started out as essentially a copy of the British show, and so to him it was like watching a show he loved but with different actors that he couldn’t understand very well. And I agree. But I also thought that if we hadn’t watched the American show first, we would have loved the British one, so we’re still watching. Has anyone else watched both shows? What do you think?

Up next is Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I never watched more than a minute or two when this was on television, but the Giraffe says it was great. And now that I bother to listen, I keep hearing the same from other people too. I can’t really imagine what makes it so good, but I’m willing to try it.

It might take us awhile to get through that one, but what else should we watch? I don’t like to start shows on DVD unless the series has ended. I hate watching two seasons in a row, then having to wait forever in between the rest (hello L Word, can we get Season Six out already?).

Know of any shows that are completely done (the series has ended) and are available on DVD? What do you recommend we watch?

Unrelated to your question, but you do know there are $9.95 plans that give you the very basic channels, right? I know $9.95 is not free, but it’s the next best thing. I get about 18 channels plus (Ooo) VH1.

I had to finagle to get that price with Charter, but finally got there. Sorry the antenna idea didn’t work. I hope you guys can get your TV fix, umm, fixed.

I’m currently watching Curb Your Enthusiasm which you guys might like if you liked Seinfeld. It’s not done but should be by the time you got through all the available seasons.

I agree with Brad….and also want to make it clear that I’m FAR from impressed with the new “digital signals.” Since the conversion I’ve been met with a black screen more times than not…which makes for one UN-happy lady!!!

We’ve watched both versions of The Office, and I, too, was not enamored with the original right off the bat. I quickly realized that while the concept of both the British and American versions is the same, they really are two very different shows with very different feels, and eventually the British version grew on me. You’ve at least gotta make it to the Comic Relief episode. By far the funniest, in terms of David Brent antics.

And yes, there were only two seasons (plus one special) before it was canceled.

We’ve been re-watching the American version lately, and it’s just so, so funny. I just love the pranks Jim pulls on Dwight.

I added Arrested Development to my netflix queue because Jason’s friend Luke talks about it NONSTOP. And I’ve heard lots of other good things about it. AND…it fits your requirements. So there you go.

  5. Babs says:

This is what netflix does best! I have watched or currently have in my queue:
    Entourage
    Moonlighting
    Remington Steele
    Blossom
    21 Jump Street
    Six Feet Under
    Popular
    Fat Actress

There are TONS more. Especially old HBO shows like Curb your enthusiasm, which was great. You can always add 24, it will take you forever to get caught up with that.

The (British) Office wasn’t cancelled after two seasons. They just realized that the concept really couldn’t carry it further. (How long do you think your company would allow a documentary to be made about it?) I watched the British version which I find hilarious because of the way it makes you so uncomfortable. The American version was unwatchable.

I absolutely INSIST that you watch VERONICA MARS if you haven’t already. I know you’re a Gilmore Girls fan, and I’ve yet to meet any fans of that show who don’t also love Veronica. Even my boyfriend became addicted! The show premises sounds a bit juvenile, but I promise it’s not. You’ll be hooked. There are 3 seasons and then it was canceled, all available on DVD.

I second the nomination for Arrested Development. We’ve been watching it on Hulu and I’m freakin’ ADDICTED. It’s crazy and random and makes me feel better about my life. WATCH IT!

  9. Dori says:

I second the hearty endorsement of Veronica Mars. LOVED that show, but be careful, because it’s crazy addictive and you’ll find yourself staying up extremely late, riveted to the complicated plot.

Six Feet Under is also amazing, but dark.

You can get the last season of the L Word through various online channels (such as megavideo), so I’d encourage that one, although it’s for the most part pretty trashy and girly and the Giraffe might like it solely for the (fairly explicit) s(e)x. Just an FYI that the first season is quite weird, it gets better.

I also got hooked into _Secret Diary of a Call Girl_ (British, available online), but it’s a short “series.”

Arrested Development is the best show EVER. The only problem is that you will be sorely disappointed that it was only three seasons, but you can fervently hope with the rest of us fans that the movie will be made.
Also if you haven’t seen Six Feet Under or the Sopranos, you’re missing out. Both are done now, and amazing pieces of work.

  11. A. says:

I agree with Willikat on Six Feet Under. Also, we’re watching The Wire right now and totally digging it. I’ve never seen the Sopranos, but would love to.

I also want to watch Weeds, though that show is still on the air.

Also, The West Wing – LOVE IT.

I have the BBC The Office. I think it’s funny – way more painful to watch than our The Office, Ricky Gervais is amazing – but I hold our Scranton bunch much closer to my heart.

And, I constantly go back to Friends, Scrubs and Sex and the City when I want to watch TV on DVD. (Though maybe those aren’t for The Giraffe?)

  12. Jess says:

That really stinks that you aren’t able to get any channels. Unfortunately, I’m not much of a tv watcher. You already know my obsessions: Charmed, Prison Break & LHOP. lol
