Something to look foward to

Everyone keeps telling me that to get out of this funk, I need something to look foward to. I agree! And actually, I do have something I’m looking foward to, it’s just that it always seemed so far away.

But finally it’s May, which means that it’s in this month that I get to get away from here for awhile. It’s within my reach. I can maybe actually hold on till then.

Later this month I’m going to Phoenix for work and then to San Diego to visit a friend. The first stop is five a whole days of conferencing, most of which will be done without any coworkers. They’re not coming until mid-week, so I’m the designee to go to all the pre-conference stuff. I was looking at a few days alone in Arizona, but then I had this brilliant idea. Brad could come with me! All we’d have to do is pay for his airfare and some meals. The hotel and ground transportation are on my employer. I can’t believe it actually worked out, but we booked our tickets last month and we’re officially spending five days in Phoenix together. Granted, I’ll be stuck inside conference rooms all day while he’s lounging at the pool, but at least we can spend our evenings together, swimming and exploring.

And since I was going to be so far west anyway, I figured why not jet over to San Diego to visit my dear friend and her baby? A ticket from Phoenix to San Diego is a hell of a lot cheaper than one from Detroit and back. Like, waaaay cheaper. So I definitely couldn’t pass this up. At the end of the conference, Brad will fly home alone and I’ll head to California for five days of fun, sun, friends, babies, oceans, cities and checking out an exciting new place.

Right now May 21st is my beacon of light shining in the distance. Phoenix, though it’ll be all worky and stuff, should be fun with Brad in tow. And San Diego promises to be an amazing time.

If any of you are from or have visited Phoenix and/or San Diego, please share any ideas for entertainment. Restaurants I must try, sites I must see, people I must meet, bridges I must spit off of. While in Arizona, we’ll actually be in Scottsdale with limited transportation, but we still want to get out a bit. My friend has a lot of ideas for San Diego, but I’m always open for suggestions. And hey, if you live in or near either place and want to meet a stranger, that’s always fun right? Let’s try it.

What you’re doing in Phoenix is exactly what we just did in Savannah. We’re doing it again in June, only this time I have to work a book fair while Roth gets to come along and explore New York City. Not a bad gig. it’s kind of the only way we can see places without breaking the bank.

Have fun in San Diego. Did you now that’s Spanish for “whale’s vagina?” Please tell me you get this reference.

Ummm….why aren’t you looking forward to my homecoming??? San Diego is apparently more important than your fellow brownie.
    Whatever…

That’s awesome! I’m excited for you. A bit jealous too. I’ve never been to the other side of this great nation. I’ve always wanted to go. Take lots of pics (I’m sure you will) and have a GREAT time!

I have been to spring training in Phx 4 years in a row. Some things to remember: It is a huuuuuuuge town. You might want to rent a car.

In Scottsdale, the restaurant Los Sombreros is not to be missed. You will need reservations. My other favorite restaurant there is Barrio Cafe, which is in a funky part of town but is fabulous. There are also some restaurants and bars with great views of the beautiful area. Laying by the pool is highly recommended.

We always to to the indoor kart track while we are there, which is way fun. Our other diversion besides days and days of baseball is greyhound racing. It is free so you aren’t supporting the evil greyhound racing industry. The track is totally sleazy, but man I love to watch them doggies run. (My dog is half greyhound).
